Tuesday, August 26, 2014: The Importance of Breakfast
- Review with the students the importance for “Fueling for School:”
Health and Academics
Research shows that students can benefit from eating breakfast in two ways. First, students’ overall diety health is positively affected by breakfast consumption. Second, there is significant improvements in standardized test scores and improvements in school attendance in addition to other outcomes that create positive learning environments. By providing school breakfast to all students, this helps ensure that they are well nourished and ready to learn.
Research shows that hungry children don’t perform as well in the classroom. In fact, more than 100 studies verify the connection between sound nutrition and higher academic achievement, finding that students who eat a healthy breakfast are more prepared to learn and excel at math and reading. Additional benefits include better attendance, lower tardiness and fewer trips to the school nurse.
“Before our Breakfast in the Classroom program, many of our students skipped the most important meal of the day. Some had not eaten since the lunch served at our schools the previous day. We know that kind of hunger is the enemy of learning,” Superintendent John Deasy said.
Board Member Nury Martinez said, "A hungry child is a distracted child. In the year since we've implemented the program, we've seen increased academic performance, attention span and focus with decreased absenteeism, tardiness and visits to the nurse because of hunger. Breakfast in the Classroom ensures that all LAUSD students start the day as prepared to learn as possible and I'm proud to support this important initiative."
- Pass out handout: About Breakfast in the Classroom
- Cold call on students to read sections of the handout and review as a whole class. Students can take notes or highlight the benefits of Breakfast in the Classroom.
Wednesday, August 27, 2014: Review Implementation of Arleta High School’s Grab and Go Breakfast Program/ Senior Attendance Policy
- Review the following information with students and answer any questions they still have:
-In order for Arleta High School to start the implementation of Breakfast in the Classroom, we are asking Arleta Mustangs to participate in the Grab and Go Breakfast Program. Please encourage students to arrive early so they have enough time to eat and get to class on time.
- Breakfast will be served from approximately 7:50 a.m. to 8:20 a.m. in front of the school and by the Beachy Gate. Food Carts will be available for students in these areas. Students are encouraged to grab their breakfast, put in their Student Pin Number and enjoy their breakfast before Period 1 begins. As always, we ask that all students throw their trash away upon finishing their breakfast BEFORE entering the buildings when heading to their first period class.
-ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD or DRINK will be allowed in the classrooms. In order to promote the Grab and Go Breakfast Program, Arleta HS will hold campaigns where individual students can win prizes. More information will follow.
- Ask if students have any questions; answer them when you can and check with Ms. Alva Sainz if you or your students have any additional questions.
- Remind students that another important indicator of success in high school is regular and consistent attendance. In fact, it is part of the Education Code that students must attend school. Refer to the Compulsory Education Code. Attendance is always important, but there are significantly negative consequences for poor attendance in twelfth grade: NO participation in important senior activities, including Senior Breakfast, Prom, Grad Night and even, Graduation.
- Pass out and discuss the "11 Facts About Dropping Out." Discuss with students what they need to be doing to ensure they will not drop out and are in school each and every day.
Thursday, August 28, 2014: Introduction of the Mustang Milestones
- Pass out the copy of the Twelfth Grade Mustang Milestones to your students. Explain to the students that this sheet is a place where they can check off all of the milestones they have accomplished each mester. All students at AHS will be referring to this milestones checklist to help them stay on track for college and post-secondary planning. This is a wonderful tool that was created for to help the students prepare for their senior year. Explain that they need to take advantage of using this sheet.
- As a whole group go through the milestones. Point out that there are four domains: Academic Domain, Graduation Requirements, Extra Curricular/Community Involvement, and College Knowledge. Ask the students why they thing each domain is important. Explain to the class that this checklist is to help them prepare for college. If they are behind in credits now is the time for them to speak to their counselor about their options (i.e. adult school, II Lab, Pacoima Skills Center, etc.). It is not too late for them to make up credits but they need to pass every class in order to stay on track for graduation. In addition, if they are behind in artifacts they need to create replacement artifacts. Before they know it senior year will be almost complete and they have to not only pass advisory but have their portfolio ready to be defended.
- Tell the students that they will be referring to this log periodically throughout the school year to update what they are doing.
