Introduction to Art (Period 3)

Course Description

Class Expectations

The goal of this class is to develop your art skills by creating work guided by the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.  This journey will help you gain artistic skills and develop the following abilities:

  • Visual communication
  • Self-reflection
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
  • Courage and willingness to try new things
  • Awareness of visual art in the real world

Grading and Due Dates

  • Assignments will be given in class and will be uploaded through Schoology.  Students should turn in all assignments through Schoology by photographing their work.  Artwork must also be turned in physically by the due dates posted.
  • A rubric will be available with each 100 point art assignment, please email the teacher if you have questions about grading and rubrics.
  • Some assignments, such as exercises and quizzes, will count for fewer points. These will not have a rubric but instructions will be clearly given for how to receive full credit for these tasks.
  • Late Assignments: All assignments will have a due date. Please submit your assignments on time, even if they are incomplete!  This will allow you to receive feedback from the teacher, which you may use to improve your work and resubmit for a higher grade.  Please resubmit any assignments before the end of each grading period.  (Teacher will provide reminders)

Extra Credit Opportunities

  • SKETCHBOOKS: Students are encouraged to develop their art practice at home by keeping a personal sketchbook.  Students may document a 2 page spread of drawings for each week and earn 10 points for every weekly submission. Please see examples of sketchbook spreads on Schoology.  If you complete a spread every week during the semester, that’s 100 points! (The same as one full graded assignment).
  • Other extra credit opportunities will be given through the year, such as holiday themed projects and attending community art events such as museum and gallery shows.  These opportunities will be posted on Schoology and announced in class as they occur.

My intentions are to set every single student up for success, I will do my best to give you the tools and knowledge needed to succeed.  Please do not hesitate to ask any questions if something is unclear. I cannot wait to see what you create!
