Standards Focus: Types of Conflict
 
Conflict is a literary term indicating the struggle between two or more opposing forces.  If conflict is written well, it can create a feeling of suspense, tension and intrigue.  There are several types of conflict:
 
1. Man vs. Man  - external -struggle between two or more characters
2. Man vs. Himself   - Internal  -   struggle between a characters and his conscience, morals,or physical limitations.
3. Man vs. Nature- external -struggle between a character and a force of nature
4. Man vs. Society -external-struggle between a character and the rules, beliefs, or pressures of a society or community
5. Man vs. Fate - external-struggle between a character and the forces of the universe, such as a deity, destiny, or chance happenings
 
Conflict is generally divided into two categories:  Internal and External.
 
Internal conflict is Man vs. Himself. All other types of conflict are External.
In a complex novel or play, there will also be main conflicts as well as subordinate conflicts.
