English 10AB is focused on expanding students' knowledge, understanding and application of word analysis, fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literary response and analysis, writing strategies, writing applications, written and oral language conventions, listening and speaking strategies, and speaking applications. These concepts and procedures are developed by learning, understanding and using new vocabulary, reading and discussing books, short stories, and poems, giving written and oral responses to and discussing various literary works, and further developing and utilizing grammar, punctuation and spelling concepts. The Writing portion at the 10th grade level is focused on teaching students how to write clear, coherent, and focused narrative, expository, persuasive and descriptive texts of at least 1,500 words. Students will complete PBL (Project Based Learning) and service learning projects throughout the year. Our novel reading will include To Kill A Mockingbir by Harper Lee. ID numbers will be issued at the beginning of the school year and grades will be posted weekly using the ID number rather than the student's name.
COURTESY GRADE REPORTS
Courtesy grade reports are available to students/parents by request at any time. You may make a request by contacting Ms. Dowell at 818-686-4100 or sending a note by your child. Parents will be promptly notified in writing if their child is not meeting the requirements to pass English 10AB. Parents are asked to sign and return any communication concerning grades and to schedule an appointment to conference with the teacher in person, or via phone.

All students are expected to treat school and personal property with respect. Therefore, any "tagging" or destruction of property will result in definite consequences. Cell phones will be confiscated if used during class time.
DAILY EXPECTATIONS/CONSEQUENCES
Passing Time
1. Enter room orderly; be on time and ready to work.
2. Sit in designated seat or area.
3. Check over any assignment that is due.
4. Check screen/board for directions and proceed as directed.
5. Once class has started, students will not be allowed to interrupt the instructional period by exiting the room to leave or pick up materials.
Assignment Format
All work handed in must be in cursive, best handwriting, or typed on computer with full name in upper right hand corner, subject and period written under name, and date written under subject and period. Do not skip any lines and write title in center of page. Work typed on a computer should be in 12-14" font.
Any messy or illegible work will not be graded and students will be allowed to re-do the work within a designated time period, or an "F" will be entered in grade book for that assignment. After the 1st week of school, points will be deducted from grade for any papers turned in without correct format.
During Class (40% of grade)
1. Keep all food, beverage, or personal items inside backpack. Any items taken out of a backpack or displayed in class that are not related to the assignment, will be collected by the teacher and must be picked up by a parent or guardian, otherwise the item will not be given back until the end of the year.
2. Be positive in words and actions.
3. Be organized and prepared to discuss topics, work on projects, and put learning into practice.

1. Return any borrowed materials to designated areas.
2. Clean work area.

1. Wait to be excused by teacher.
2. Push chair in.
3. Exit orderly.
Homework (10% of grade)
1. Approximately 1 hour of homework is issued daily.
2. All assignments are due on date specified.
3. If absent, an extra day will be given for each day absent to complete work and submit for full credit.
It is the student's responsibility to check with teacher about any missed work due to an absence.
4. All homework assignments must be completed in the designated format. Any homework submitted without the designated format will not be graded unless the teacher gives permission.
Group Projects, Tests and Major Assignments (40% of grade)
1. All major projects are due on date specified.
2. If absent, have another student or family member bring your project to submit for full credit.
3. For each day that a project is late, grade will be dropped one full letter for the student involved.
4. Weekly tests are to be completed as scheduled.
5. If absent, schedule a make-up test with the teacher, during the first week returning to receive full credit.
Miscellaneous (10% of grade)
Students will receive the total point value of any assessments or tests with a 10% weight on their total grade by:
1. Reviewing the test during class and signing it.
2. Taking the test home to review with parents and having the parent/guardian sign the test.
3. Returning the test within the current grading period.
Students who have no missing assignments during the current grading period may complete extra credit assignments to improve their GPA.
Tutoring
After School Tutoring is available weekly from 3:30-4:30 P.M. for all students on an "as needed basis". During this time, students may make up any missing tests, etc...The day will be determined.
Students must
1. Sign up for tutoring.
2. Arrive on time and sign in.
3. Sign out when leaving.

Weekly classwork and homework assignments for English 10AB will be sent home from Ms. Dowell requiring a parent signature. Parents and students may communicate with Ms. Dowell for help and clarification of assignments by email:
