Course Description

LIFE SKILLS

Mr. Berg’s Class Syllabus

Priority One
The California State Standards for Education will be the focus of the student’s instruction in Mr. Berg’s class. This course meets the your Life Skills requirement for graduation.

Of Measured Importance
The student will focus on:
1. Theater Appreciation
2. Team Building
3. Acting Basics
4. Life Style and Survival Skills

Class Description
The major purpose of this course is for the student to make meaningful connections between theatre arts and the greater world at large. The student will be called upon to listen, perform, speak, think, and write.

School Policies
All school policies regarding student attendance and behavior apply to this class. Students are expected to behave in a manner conducive to learning. Students are required to adhere to the school dress code. Students are expected to bring necessary learning materials and assigned textbooks to class each day. Textbooks must be covered and maintained in the condition in which they were issued. Students are responsible for the cost of lost or damaged textbooks.

Attendance
All students are required to attend class and come prepared to work.

Special Note: If a student returns from an absence with a “truancy (#3)” he/she will receive a “U” unsatisfactory in cooperation for the first offense. For the second offense, he/she will receive a “U” in work habits. The students has one day to clear any errors in his/her attendance.

TEXT = THEATRE: Art in Action and other texts, as assigned.

Homework
Homework is assigned several times a week. Homework may consist of reading, writing, research, or project based assignments. Students are required to keep a homework log on a calendar or daily planner. All homework must be turned in on the assigned due date. Students may have two additional days to make up daily work missed due to legitimate absences (this does not include major projects and essays).

Class Procedures
1. THE USE OF DEODORANT, HAIRSPRAY, LOTION, MAKE-UP, OR PERFUMEDURING CLASS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
2. Be in your seat, quiet and working before the bell rings.
3. Your NAME, DATE, and PERIOD must be written correctly in the top right hand corner of every assignment or the assignment will not be graded.
4. Use a pencil, a blue pen or a black pen. (Sharpen your pencil BEFORE the bell rings.)
5. RAISE YOUR HAND, if you have something to say, or if you need to leave your seat.
6. Bring ALL required materials to class, including: paper, pencils, pens, and a reading book.
Leave non-school materials (i.e., CD players, video games, etc.) at home.
7. You are responsible for all make-up work.
8. Turn in your homework as you enter the classroom.
9. Turn in your classwork as you exit the classroom.
10. The teacher dismisses class -- NOT the bell!

Evaluation
Student mastery of the standards will be assessed in a variety of ways, including:
Three Major Projects worth 400 points each
Classwork, homework, quizzes, and tests will vary in points earned.

Grading Scale
A student’s academic grade is based on the percentage of points possible received.
A = 90% or higher B = 80% to 89% C = 70% to 79%
D = 55% to 69% F = less than 54%

Each student will also receive and evaluation of his/her work habits and cooperation. E = excellent S = satisfactory U = unsatisfactory

A student may also receive comments that indicate specific areas of strength or weakness.

How can I help my student succeed?

Help your student set a consistent block of time aside each day to work on homework, class assignments, or enrichment activities. Provide a quiet study area in which your student can study. Encourage him or her to form study partnerships or study groups with other students in his or her class.
