These are the Requirements in order to graduate high school. LAUSD Course and Exam Requirements 230 Credits and passage of both sections of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) 3 Years of Social Studies World History A/B US History A/B Gov’t/Economics 4 Years of English Engilsh 9A/B English 10A/B Amer. Lit/Cont. Composition Expos. Composition/English Elective 2 Years of College Prep Math Algebra 1A/B Geometry A/B or Adv. Applied Math A/B or Algebra 2 A/B 3 years of Math through Algebra 2A/B required for admission to 4 year University 2 Years of College Prep Science Biology Physical Science 2 Years of Physical Education 1 Year Visual or Performing Art 1 Year Applied Technology 1 Semester Health 1 Semester Life Skills 14 Semesters of Electives (this can include college prep, advanced math, foreign language, additional fine arts and/or technical arts) Computer Literacy requirement (take and pass 1 computer class) Service Learning Experience Career Pathway 2 Years of Foreign Language (3 Recommended) NOT required for HS graduation, but is required for admission to a 4 year University. California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) What Happens if I don’t pass the CAHSEE? Students who don’t pass the CAHSEE do not earn a diploma. Students who do not pass one or both parts of the CAHSEE in grade 10 may have an opportunity to retake the test two more times in grade 11, two times in grade 12, and once after grade 12. Students retake only the part or parts of the exam not previously passed. The school district must provide aditional instructions to assist students who do not pass the exam (ed. Code section 60851 (e)). What does the English-Language Arts section of CAHSEE cover? The English-Language Arts part of the CAHSEE covers the state academic content standards through grade 10. The reading section includes vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and analysis of information and literary texts. The writing section covers writing strategies, applications, and conventions of Standard English (e.g., grammar, spelling, and punctuation.) What does the Mathematics section of the CAHSEE cover? The Mathematics section of the CAHSEE covers state academic content standards in grades 6 and 7 and Algebra 1. The Mathematics section includes statistics, data analysis and probability, number sense, measurment, geometry, mathematical reasoning, and Algebra 1. Students are also asked to demonstrate a strong foundation in computation and arithmetic, including working with decimals, fractions and percents. CREDITS REQUIRED FOR PROMOTION The following number of credits needs to be earned in order to promote to the next grade level. For example, in order to be considered a sophomore (grade 10), the student needs to have earned 55 credits by the end of the summer before the sophomore year.
